Kendra Morris

Kendra Morris recalls singers who straddled soul and rock during the early ’70s, such as Ruth Copeland and Chaka Khan.
With her fourth full-length album, Kendra invites listeners into the DIY kaleidoscope world of Next. Her latest record for Karma Chief Records strips away layered production and slick sounds to create a sonic palette deeply rooted in her influences and inspirations. Decades of New York sounds and voices bend and blend throughout the tracks—a world where the Brill Building and Warhol’s Factory thrive on the same block while Blondie and the Frightnrs explore rocksteady sounds. Doo-wop and boom-bap soundtrack a UHF network’s worth of cut-and-paste stylings, all guided by Morris, a visual artist equally at home behind the lens as she is in front of a microphone.
Kendra has been remixed by DJ Premier, featured on Czarface albums alongside Ghostface Killah and MF DOOM, and collaborated with Little Shalimar of Run The Jewels.
